Yuschenko said this while meeting with students and teachers of the Institute of International Relations at Shevchenko State University.

"What we have today [in relations with Russia] is temporary. The fact that we do not have a [Russian] ambassador is just an episode. I believe that common sense will win. I have offered my hand to the Russian leadership dozens of times and I will continue doing this," Yuschenko said.

Ukraine should learn "how to use its geopolitics" and remember that "the great Russian state lies in the east, where many of our strategic interests dwell," the president said. At the same time, Yuschenko said that relations between Ukraine and Russia have never been simple as now.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in August criticized what he called an anti-Russian policy of Yuschenko, and postponed sending a Russian ambassador to Kyiv. In his response to Medvedev dated August 13, Yuschenko denied the anti-Russian policy accusations and said he is hoping for constructive dialogue with Russia.
